Are you actually buying whole wheat bread? (How to see through deceptive bread marketing)
Переглядів 6 тис.3 роки тому
Most wheat bread at the store isn’t whole grain - it’s just white bread with some marketing tricks on it. (In the USA) look for the protected phrase “100% whole wheat” or check the nutrition facts. 16g of whole grain flour is considered “whole wheat.” See the video for examples of how sneaky the fakes can be! “Honey wheat,” “Stone ground wheat,” “Healthy multigrain,” etc... are all just refined...

Character Development Through Clothing in "Rushmore" (1998)
Переглядів 1,5 тис.4 роки тому
When defining a character, an author has an array of available tools to write with. Characters are made specific through qualities like their goals, actions, manner of speech, name, and appearance. Wes Anderson’s Rushmore is a terrific example of using wardrobe to reinforce not only the nature of a character, but also the character’s growth and progress throughout the story.

This is such a wonderful video! I'm no dancer, but I love this movie, and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to see it through the eyes of someone who really knows the ins and outs of that world. I'm so happy to hear it's just as enjoyable to a professional ballroom dancer as it is to a layperson! It gives me fresh appreciation for the effort Baz Luhrmann put into the movie.

Tim and I are about the same age, and grew up around the Detroit area on the same TV stations. I grew up without cable, but also spent a lot of time with my grandparents, so I definitely grew up aware of the Colgate Comedy Hour. That's especially true if you were a kid who liked comedy or wanted to do comedy. I can't remember what affiliate re-ran episodes, but it was definitely something he probably would have seen as a kid if he was around older people.

You answered a question that I've always had. I know that, in France, dance classes teach the paso doble, but demonstrations I've seen on French TV don't look anything like the dance in the movie. But that's probably because it was a paso doble that the general public would do , not the competitlve dance.

What struck me most in the film was how Baz Luhrmann made fun of the extreme (and absolutely frozen and artificial) smiling of everyone on the scene. Seems also quite accurate for ballroom dancing at that time…

Fantastic review, and spot on regarding the movie's intended audience. The lack of traditional main characters in favour of a collective protagonist of Japan's people working together, and the allegories to the tragedies Japan has suffered in its history, is wonderful and chilling, especially with that soundtrack.

Maybe that would be you in that situation, but you skip a lot. Remember he blew up the Death Star after saving the princess. That made the front page of every paper in the galaxy. Then went on to Turning Darth Vader to the light and defeat the Emperor when the second Death Star was blown up. He is on his own with this Old Religion which he must rebuild. Again all this front page stuff. People are naming kids after him, even Elementry schools now bear his name. He is the new emperior of the galaxy. He didnt run away, he needed those texts. Thats why he was going to exagal too. You go on to mention what he might of went through when he realized he killed hundreds of thousands. Really, what are you talking about some clones or orphans etc... vs what a death star or two, or the finicial wizard who paid for them plus a hidden fleet...pretty easy moral to weigh. Remember this was good vs evil, the innocent can pay.

I love the grandmother. There is a very subtle item in the script that is only noticeable to a Spanish speaker. When she asked “¿Tú bailes Paso Doble?” First she uses the informal tú form with someone she has just met, which is bit insulting. Second she uses the subjunctive mode in saying “bailes” rather than the indicative mode which would be “bailas”. The subjunctive mode indicates doubt. So she is really saying “I don’t believe that you dance the paso doble”

    • @ObakuZenCenter

That's not a language, it's a mix, you must know one language and a little bit of vocabulary from the other and you will understand all most everithing. Like if you move yo an other region that has it's own dialect. At thé begining it's hard, but you understand, and with contact you get used to. That border dialect evolves with the evolution of the other two languages and becomes more and more standard English, or standard Spanish. It hasn't It's omen evolution. It's a clare case of diglosia, one language has prestige and the other hasn't. Because of that when the speaker don't know how to say something in one language he copy-pastes the other, yo continiu speaking the language socialy conected to the situation. With time everibody understands that expresions in the region. The words from other languages aren't realy from the contact betwen cultures, but because of the contact with main languages. French has no contact with nauatl, the language of aztekas, and they say "chocolat", but they take that word from Spanish "chocolate", that was toke from nauatl "chocotl", not directly. So, I accept that's interesting and that it's conected to history. But in constant conexion with the main languages It will stay always as a dialect, and in that standardisation moment, it will become more and more standard. It's not losing, It's the last step in the Spanish desapearing proces in that region, not an independent language with it's own grammar. That's interesting also, but we must not bé romantic with "that desapearing language made from mixing cultures". It's a conflict betwen English and Spanish speakers and the community betwen is diferent from both sides, but the reality is that they are aculturizated people that doesn't fit completly in that English world, neither in the Spanish one. But there's no so much original stuff, everithing is a take from one language or the other. Stoping taking from one side to take it from the other is only a new step to total assimilation.
